Latent Belief Theory and Belief Dependencies: A Solution to the Recovery Problem in the Belief Set Theories

چکیده

The AGM recovery postulate says: assume a set of propositions X ; assume that it is consistent and that it is closed under logical consequences; remove a belief P from the set minimally, but make sure that the resultant set is again some set of propositions X ′ which is closed under the logical consequences; now add P again and close the set under the logical consequences; and we should get a set of propositions that contains all the propositions that were in X . This postulate has since met objections; many have observed that it could bear counter-intuitive results. Nevertheless, the attempts that have been made so far to amend it either recovered the postulate in full, had to relinquish the assumption of the logical closure altogether, or else had to introduce fresh controversies of their own. We provide a solution to the recovery paradox in this work. Our theoretical basis is the recently proposed belief theory with latent beliefs (simply the latent belief theory for short). Firstly, through an example, we will illustrate that there are still rooms for improvement in the latent belief theory in order to naturally model certain scenarios. We will identify that a latent belief, when it becomes visible, may remain visible only while the beliefs that triggered it into the agent’s consciousness are in the agent’s belief set. In order that such situations can be also handled, we will enrich the latent belief theory with belief dependencies among attributive beliefs, recording the information as to which belief is supported of its existence by which beliefs. We will show that the enriched latent belief theory does not possess the recovery property. The closure by logical consequences is maintained in the theory, however. Hence it serves as a solution to the open problem in the belief set theories.

belief function and the transferable belief model

Beliefs are the result of uncertainty. Sometimes uncertainty is because of a random process and sometimes the result of lack of information. In the past, the only solution in situations of uncertainty has been the probability theory. But the past few decades, various theories of other variables and systems are put forward for the systems with no adequate and accurate information. One of these a...

A Note on Belief Structures and S-approximation Spaces

We study relations between evidence theory and S-approximation spaces. Both theories have their roots in the analysis of Dempsterchr('39')s multivalued mappings and lower and upper probabilities, and have close relations to rough sets. We show that an S-approximation space, satisfying a monotonicity condition, can induce a natural belief structure which is a fundamental block in evidence theory...

A Pragmatic Solution to the Value Problem of Knowledge

We value possessing knowledge more than true belief. Both someone with knowledge and someone with a true belief possess the correct answer to a question. Why is knowledge more valuable than true belief if both contain the correct answer? I examine the philosophy of American pragmatist John Dewey and then I offer a novel solution to this question often called the value problem of knowledge. I pr...

Element of justification in contemporary epistemology

The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge.  Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most im...

A combined evaluation method to rank alternatives based on VIKOR and DEA with BELIEF structure under uncertainty

This paper processes a combined method, based on VIKOR and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to select the units with most efficiency. We utilize the VIKOR as compromise solution method. This research is a two-stage model designed to fully rank the alternatives, where each alternative has multiple inputs and outputs. The problem involves BELIEF parameters in the solution procedure. First, the alt...
